Ragnarok (route 4) opened in 2019 and is an extremely demanding and long via ferrata. The route is steep with small and few natural foot holds and handles, and includes overhangs. The route constantly offers mental, technical and physical challenges. This route requires very good physical shape. Anyone who is going to climb Ragnarok must have completed a via ferrata with elements in difficulty level E. Instructors are not available in the Ragnarok route. For experienced climbers only. Enjoy!

The tour starts on a gravel road and path to 435 m.a.s.l. where you attach to the wire. Soon you arrive by the overhang, where very good climbing skills are needed. The tour is continously steep all the way. Ragnarok is only for experienced via ferrata climbers with very good strength. Contact Loen Active to learn more about Ragnarok - we do not want anyone to get stuck. Remember that if you get stuck, you must be able to get down again.

The tour requires helmet, climbing harness with via ferrata sling. We recommend to return with with Loen Skylift (ticket can be bought on the ticket machine at the mountain station.

Important about safety

  • Loen Active recommends that you have managed to climb Thor’s Hammer (route 3, short category E-loop) at the top of Via Ferrata Loen two times after each other before you consider climbing Ragnarok. Climbing in Ragnarok can be compared with a long climbing route of grade 6+ (it is perhaps barely 1% of our via ferrata guests who are able to complete Ragnarok).

  • You must have a third via ferrata sling (quill) to complete the box.

  • Good via ferrata shoes are necessary to climb Ragnarok. This can be bought or rented at Loen Active.

  • Wear rubber gloves. Can be bought at Loen Active.

  • Bring enough drink and food. Water is not available in the climbing route.

  • There are two “escape” opportunities to Via Ferrata classic during the trip.

Description of the difficulty categories in Ragnarok

E = EXTREMELY DIFFICULT
Vertical and frequently overhanging rocky terrain. A constant mental, technical and physical challenge. At sections where maximum physical strength is needed, only 1-2 attempts may be possible. Agility and gymnastic abilities are definitely advantageous. Leave this to the specialists. All details described under «D» apply in increased dimensions. Recommended equipment: Via Ferrata sling with two retractable arms, and a third arm that is convenient for traversing or pausing.

F = EXTREMLY DIFFICULT+
Overhanging and only (often a loose) rope, no aglets. Recommended equipment: Via Ferrata sling with two retractable arms, and a third arm that is convenient for traversing or pausing. Experience from grade E is required. Recommended equipment: Via Ferrata sling with two retractable arms, and a third arm that is convenient for traversing or pausing.

An extra +/- on grading increases or decreases the degree of difficulty.
